Should You Buy New or Used Equipment?

If you’re looking for a new addition to your farming operation that will help with precision agriculture, you may be wondering if new or used is a better option for your operation. While you may think you’re getting a deal with used equipment, it might cost you more to implement it than you thought. On the other hand, used equipment can be a great investment in many cases and is a way to save money on the farm. Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of buying new or used equipment.

autotracPros: New Equipment

One of the biggest pros of brand new equipment is that you know it will work, and if it doesn't, it most likely comes with a warranty. You also have somewhere you can return it for a refund if you have problems. This is especially ideal in situations of technical difficulty. Plus, new equipment usually improves on older versions. This means you’re likely getting a better version of the product, but that does come at a price. Lastly, when you get new products you’re usually working with a dealer and with used products you may be at an auction or buying from a friend or someone unfamiliar with its history. So, you may not have an opportunity to ask questions and you’ll need to do research for yourself. This is not the case with new products where you are free to ask as many questions as you need and get the advice you need for your specific farming operation.

Cons: New Equipment

The most obvious con of new equipment is its high price tag. No matter what you’re looking at, it’s usually going to cost more to buy it new than to buy it used. Additionally, as more and more models quickly come out, we’re bound to have some redundancy and some models that work better in their earlier forms. This is a risk with buying any brand new equipment rather than waiting to see how it works for others.

used equipmentPros: Used Equipment

Used equipment can be bought at much lower prices, and it’s useful for buying equipment that’s not necessary to buy new. This could be something like a guidance system for an old tractor. You need something, but it doesn’t need to be the best of the best. This is where used equipment comes in. However, used equipment can still be in great shape. Look for items still in the box, with all cords, etc. to make sure that you’re not going to be spending a lot of money on the extras that make it work. Sometimes older models are more sought after, and the only place you’re going to find that is by looking for used equipment.

Cons: Used Equipment

You will not have a warranty in most cases, and you probably won’t be able to return used equipment for a refund in most cases. This can end up costing you a lot of money if you find out that your few thousand dollars buy is now going to cost you an extra ten because of missing parts. You will also need to look closely at each item and research because usually, you won’t have a dealer to advise you on what might be the best item or the best for your operation.
