Some Farmers Still Harvesting
This year has been odd for the majority of farmers in the Midwest. First, they were unable to get into the fields, due to flooding. The summer was dry and cool, and then we had early snowfalls.
Harvest Lagging Behind Average
The USDA issued its last Weekly Crop Report for 2019 on December 9th. The last report is usually added the last week of November, but this report was added due to the harvest delays this year. According to the report, some farmers are still harvesting their corn and beans. In Illinois, 96% of the corn was harvested and in Iowa, it was 95%. Michigan and Wisconsin were struggling more than Iowa and Illinois, coming in at only 74% harvested, while North Dakota was only at 43%.
Soybeans were not covered in this last report but were around 96% harvested nationally as of December 2nd.
Time Running Out
With every snowfall and winter storm that occurs, the chances that the remaining crops will be harvested falls. Let's hope that 2020 gives us better planting, growing, and harvesting weather!
All of us at West Enterprises wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
